1. How did you learn about Animal Empathy Philippines and what drew you to it?

Jim Boy:  I became acquainted with Animal Empathy Philippines (AEP) during a webinar [on chicken welfare]. AEP's mission to advocate for the welfare of farmed animals sparked my interest and motivated me to join the organization.

2. In what way/s has AEP influenced your thinking or views?

Jim Boy:  To be specific, our approach to farm animals should prioritize humane treatment. Despite raising them for food, it's essential to ensure they receive proper care and handling in all aspects of farm management. By avoiding cruelty and promoting humane practices, we can set a positive example for future generations to follow.

3. What about animal advocacy do you want to share with others?

Jim Boy: As a farmer and educator responsible for shaping future farmers, my passion lies in enhancing my knowledge and raising awareness among the general public about the importance of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP). My aim is to ensure the effective implementation of these practices, benefiting both commercial and small-scale production. This commitment stems from my desire to promote efficiency, sustainability, and conservation efforts within the livestock and poultry industry in rural areas.

4. What animal advocacy initiatives are you currently doing?

Jim Boy: Currently, we are engaged in a research initiative in collaboration with Animal Empathy Philippines (AEP) focused on Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP). Our primary goal is to investigate the adoption and application of GAHP among local swine raisers residing in selected barangays within Pontevedra, Capiz. The core objective of this project is to identify existing gaps and shortcomings within current practices, enabling us to develop evidence-based interventions. These interventions aim to enhance attitudes and decision-making processes while giving paramount consideration to the welfare of animals in the care of these farmers.

5. Any plans for the future that you are excited about?

Jim Boy: In anticipation of the study's findings, I am enthusiastic about joining the team tasked with identifying gaps for evidence-based interventions. These initiatives aim to enhance the practices of our local animal raisers in Pontevedra, Capiz, with a specific focus on improving their attitudes and decision-making processes in animal farming, all while prioritizing the welfare of the animals under their care.

6. What is your message to the AEP community?

Jim Boy: Being part of the growing family of AEP, is an opportunity not only to my profession; it aligns with my purpose to enhance the welfare of farm animals. I am very much thankful to the community, for giving me an opportunity to grow and improve in my field as they open the possibility to develop partnership and collaboration guided with our common purpose. Their openness to fostering partnerships and collaborations driven by our shared mission is deeply appreciated. Thank you, AEP, for this invaluable opportunity!
